I haven’t updated the blog with photos since I came back as I’d planned due to an unexpected welcome home gift from Monty. He snapped at our toddler, caught him under the eye & cheek causing enough of a cut to require said toddler to spend the night in hospital then have a general anaesthetic in order to get cleaned up and stitched properly.

As expected, we faced the instant horror and outrage from some friends and family that Monty was still alive, since he’d done the same to me a couple of years ago. There seemed to be some misinterpretation that we were valuing our dog’s life as more important than the safety of our baby. It was an “accident waiting to happen”. I love both my dog and baby, but would never dream of putting E’s life at risk with a dangerous dog. I did, however, feel an obligation to Monty’s best interests as well since he was my first “baby” who’d been usurped by a new young pup 2 years ago.

In both cases, Monty had snapped, not bitten. The difference being that neither of us were mauled. Yes, there were injuries, but they weren’t those inflicted by a savage dog, just a grumpy old dog in severe pain, failing eyesight and possibly hearing loss as well. All of these also contributed to his nervousness. A toddler is too young to understand you can’t poke a dog without causing it some distress, or that suddenly appearing next to him looking to play could be seen as a threat and cause a panicked reaction of protection. Similarly, you can’t just expect an elderly dog to deal with this unpredictability by turning the other cheek. We’d done our best since E started toddling to keep the two apart, without resorting to caging up either of them, but it wasn’t enough. All it took was a couple of seconds where eyes weren’t in the back of the head.

E’s eye has healed nicely, there’s a small scar but it should fade well and barely be noticeable. Believe me, I know it *could* have been so much worse and I thank the Universe that it wasn’t. I knew, however, that there was no way we could continue to keep Monty in our home any more as it was increasingly likely to happen again.

So my initial reaction was with regret that Monty should be rehomed, since he’d come to us 6 years ago on the proviso it was a child-free home. I didn’t see the point in having him killed for being in an environment that didn’t matach his needs. A friend volunteered to look after him short term while another home was found and I thought that was everything sorted out.

As the days went on though, I thought more and more on the reason for Monty’s snappiness. It had increased of late, and so had his arthritic pains. Whether that was the cause, or the trauma he felt after the biting, Monty then started chewing his fur in a few places, the skin turned from pink to black. There were small lumps under the areas he chewed, they could have been just fatty tissue, they could have been something more. The vet’s solution was to up the doseage of tablets, but they were already causing Monty considerable nausea and discomfort, so he wasn’t eating properly. Similarly, the more pain he was in, the less he ate, catch 22.

I also had to consider the stress that rehoming would cause Monty. He’d been in kennels for over 6 months before he came to us, and Dogs Trust had said he didn’t do well in that environment, so it would have been too stressful for him to go back there. He would possibly have been ok with my friend who offered to rehome, but last time he’d visited, she’d kept her cats away, and that wouldn’t have been fair to them for a longer period.

Deep down, I was also fairly sure Monty had some form of either cancer or organ failure going on, so I was coming round more and more to the conclusion that putting Monty to sleep would be the best option for him. Or to put it bluntly, we should have him killed to put him out of his misery.

It’s such a hard decision to take. It’s even harder when your dog masks the pain so well he still bounds round like a pup at times, but you know it must hurt as it takes longer to recover afterwards. It took me 2 days to pluck up the courage to phone the vet for an appointment, and even then, I cried my way through the phone call. I asked them to make a house call, rather than subject Monty to extra trauma of being away from his safe haven.

I had my friends Ming and Candy of Reikifurbabies send him their “Warrior” reiki on his last night as it always makes him feel more peaceful. He also had a chat with Bridget, a very reliable intuitive animal communicator, so he knew what was going to happen. (Trust me, I used to be the world’s biggest sceptic on this, but keeping an open mind is very beneficial.)

The vet’s appointment was for 11am on Thurs 18th. We arranged for E to spend the night before with his grandparents. On the weekend before, we all went to the beach for a last “family” outing, which was such fun for both E & Monty. Monty could barely move after it though, and he seemed to age every time we looked at him in the last week.

On Thursday morning, we took Monty over to the park to have a pleasurable “last” walk, but that got ruined by building work going on nearby. Loud noises = spooked dog = race back to carpark and safety. Some other person walking her dogs was dismayed that he could be so frightened by a noise she hadn’t even heard. I had to fight back the urge to say I was distraught because he would never have another chance to enjoy the park. We got back to the house and attempted to give Monty a walk in the nearby wood, but by that stage he was really edgy and just wanted us to come home with him where he felt safe. He sat between us on the sofa trembling for a while, Bridget had another chat with him, then he fell asleep for a while. The vet was an hour late, putting me really on edge every time I heard a car come round the corner. I dare say it didn’t help, transmitting those vibes to an already scared dog.

I asked the vet if we could do The Deed out in the garden and he agreed. Monty happily wagged his tail and sniffed around the vet and the nurse, but was having none of it when it came to staying still for an injection. He’d had previous experience with the nurse that wasn’t pleasant, so instinctively wasn’t going to let her get a grip on him without a fight. Jon had to get the muzzle and both I and the nurse held Monty while the sedative was put into his thigh. The vet team then left us for 15 minutes while that took effect. Monty made a last bound to play with his ball, then leaned up against Jon and tried to fight off the sleep that was overwhelming him. He didn’t want to lie down so we had to do that for him. It started to drizzle, having been fine weather for the last few weeks.

We both lay down on the blanket on the grass and cuddled him, told him how much we loved him & appreciated the joyful times he’d given us as he slipped into a sedative coma. The vet then came back to give the final dose, as I cuddled Monty on my lap. His heart stopped beating at 12.34, about half a minute before he took his last gasp. I was having flashbacks to my dad’s death at Christmas, but at least this was more peaceful.

The vets didn’t want us to watch while they removed Monty from the garden and ushered us inside the house, but we watched from the windows as they carefully put him into a body bag, wrapped in a red blanket. Then we cried even more.

We’re having Monty cremated, I don’t know yet what to do with the ashes. They’ll probably sit on display for days, weeks, months even. We may scatter them somewhere, I don’t know. I do know that they won’t be him, they’ll just be a few teaspoons worth of remains that may even contain bits of someone else’s dog’s body. But I can feel him around me in spirit. We both just miss his physical presence so much, the house is too quiet without him. We cry when he isn’t there to greet us when we open the front door, wagging his tail and sprinkling biscuits from his Kong toy everywhere in his excitement to show off his possession. We miss him charging past us on the stairs to get there before us. We’ll miss him howling at the window trying to get out to scare off all the cats that now have freedom to prowl round his territory. Jon will be quite happy to gain his share of the bed back, but only a little – we’d still rather have his ginger, furry hot-water-bottle presence and waggy tail.

E looked at the bed this morning and said “Monty” as if he could see him. He won’t remember him for much longer even though he’ll remember the name, but he’ll probably just associate it with the photo on the wall in the living room rather than the funny doggie who made him laugh when he turned in circles or sat patiently waiting for the next handfed morsel of toddler food.

It’ll be a long while yet before E is able to understand how to interact properly with any animal, he’s just a bundle of energy at the moment with no concept of the pain he can inflict with a nip, scratch or headbutt. Until he’s more aware of this, we’ll be a pet free house, but it’ll be an emptier house as a result. There’s nothing quite like the joy that comes from the unconditional love you get from a dog. My baby gives me that too, but a dog is something special to me and always will be, and I don’t think it’s something that will ever be understood by anyone who doesn’t “get” pets.

I’ve only ever felt homesick once before, during a 5 week stint working in India, so feeling like that 2 days into a mere week away caught me by surprise. It’s not even that I’ve left my baby behind for so long, since I’ve had to go away for several days with work recently.
I suppose it’s just the remoteness of the location that can play with your mind, combined with the sheer exhaustion of both body and mind. Maybe if I was a better sleeper with “company” and used to camping out, I’d have felt more rested and therefore up to the physical rigours, but I’m a Tempur mattress fan and that’s my quality standard for a decent kip.
It’s also the first time I’ve ever had a panic attack (1st night), when i was really convinced I might be dying. That doesn’t put your head in the right place to enjoy such a trip.
I have to give much credit to everyone else on the team for helping me through it, even if they didn’t realise they were. It takes a special combination of events to have made all of us feel comfortable showing our emotions in front of others, and we all feel privileged to have met each other on this trip.
I also don’t think we would have gelled so well without Alex as our “surrogate mum” team leader. He has done a fantastic job of organising us, prodding us into eating enough, keeping a subtle eye on every one of us, being a shoulder to cry on etc. He could have offered shoulder massages more regularly, but that’s a minor quibble.
Milos has been a fun navigator, great sense of humour, and, it has to be said, not unpleasing on the eye to the single ladies
From what I’ve noticed, it has been the three mums with toddlers who have had the biggest wrench emotionally, as well as Rebecca being thrown in at the deep end at such a young age. It has been a fantastic, once in a lifetime experience overall though and I’m so glad I’ve done it.
Nearly time to set off for the airport now, have been into Kiruna again for a wander and hot chocolate. Will be in touch again when we’re back in Blighty!

Our last day sledding!
I’ve been thinking a lot about my dad over the last few days, standing on a sled by yourself in the middle of nowhere gives you time for that sort of thinking. He would have loved to see all the photos, but I’m sure he’s been with me in spirit. I don’t recommend bursting into tears when it’s -20 though, it freezes.
So, back to today… Breakfast was enlivened by tales of the boys’ sauna and skinny dipping in the not-so-nearby creek. They were very wise not to let the girls know beforehand or Youtube may have crashed. We had a few eventful falls on the route home, I managed to stay on the whole way, including many times when my dogs wished I wouldn’t. The uphills were never ending! I had zero energy left to help them, as even if i’d walked up, I couldn’t have kept a grip on the sled, whuch is vital for when you get to a flatter stretch and the dogs take off. On the subject of (lack of) fitness, the training programme really should just have included “running 20 lengths of the swimming pool while carrying a 15kg weight”.
Anyway, today was Amanda’s day for mishaps. We lost her before we had even left the grounds of the lodge, as her dogs took her on a different route to us. Milos took about 10 minutes to find her and get her back on the right trail! Poor Amanda managed to fall off in 3 or 4 places on the downhills then, which the rest of us avoided by the skin of our teeth. Lorna was the only one lucky enough to see Jennifer dive headfirst off her sled into a snowdrift, but didn’t have a camera handy to capture the legs up in the air pose.
We all got back to Mushers lodge safely, however, in time for a well deserved lunch.
This afternoon we went into Kiruna town for some brief touristy shopping before visiting the Ice Hotel. We toured the various designer sculpture bedrooms, oohing and aahing lots, along with the occasional swear word when we tripped over a random block of ice. The designs for next year’s hotel rooms are being reviewed now, since the current ones will melt into the nearby river before May.
We had a little celebratory party with a cocktail or two in the ice bar. Veey tasty, but at approximately £11 for the first drink and £8 for refills, we didn’t splash out too much.
This evening, we abandoned plans for a night out in favour of some drinks in and a visit to the local co-op for snacks. I stayed up until 9.45pm, since I’ve had a stinking cold all day. Sounds like everyone has called it a night now, since a few are taking their life in their hands with a 2hr skidoo ride in the morning. I’m staying firmly put!

Usual morning, dog feeding, poop scooping and breakfast preparation. It can’t be wrong to tell an almost complete stranger you love him when he arrives at your cabin door with pancake mix, lemon juice and syrup for Shrove Tuesday. Rebecca ate enough to be allowed to continue with us, as last night she was within minutes of being transported back to base.
We had a fairly short day’s sledding to give us time to stop for lunch. We sledded for about an hour over a frozen lake with only one minor incident – Jennifer thought I should overtake her, but my dogs couldn’t really be bothered, so there was a comedy slo-mo moment where she then let her foot off the brake for a split second and her sled took off without her, leaving Jennifer face down in the snow. They must have run for at least 1/2km before anyone could stop them, and Jennifer had to arrive by dog taxi to get onboard again.
We stopped for lunch in the middle of the lake on a little island. Magical! There was light snow that looked like little crystals in the air, making everything sparkle. There was a teepee on the island with reindeer-skinned benches and a central fireplace where Milos threw together a salmon stew (veggie cupasoup for me).
After lunch we set off for another short but mostly arduous journey to our lodge for the night. I’d been thinking how the uphills hadn’t been hard work at all, but that was soon to change! We had several large, long hills to go up. My dogs gave me several filthy looks when i had to pause in between spurts of running uphill, to rest on the sled. Uno is great at giving me a scathing look any time I obviously do something wrong, including too much braking, or not enough breaking. Somehow the downhills are more terrifying than anything else, as you need to control the sled round bends at speed, while braking enough to stop your sled crashing into the back of the dogs but not so much that you lose control on a bend. We all made it!
Tonight has been spent in the Wilderness lodge, and has been wonderful. No electricity yet again, so more candlelit evenings. The dogs all have little kennels to themselves, but still have the same feeding requirements! We’re experts at lighting fires now to either cook, or boil water for us or the dogs’ frozen food mix. We had to share dinner with another group staying onsite in a smaller cabin, since we had the only kitchen. They did the washing up (badly, according to Lindsay and Carrie).
Have just come back from using the sauna…wonderful to have washed my hair for the first time in nearly a week! All my joints are aching now, and i’ve lost the ability to use my knees it seems, but muscles seem otherwise fine. I’m looking forward to going to the gym on Friday, but only to spend forever in the hot tub to un-knarl my fingers from their claw like clenched grip.
Tomorrow is the end of our sledding. We’re going to get back to Mushers lodge in time for lunch, then head to the ice hotel for a celebratory drink

Had slightly more sleep but was still awake by 4am, then couldn’t get back to sleep due to the cold and support act from the howling wind. Took delight in waking everyone else at 7…dog feeding was at 7.30 followed by breakfast at 8. Our Sami host produced some caviar paste to go with the boiled eggs, yuk! Still felt I had to force food down, but reckoned it would help the fatigue. Rebecca managed a slice of bread but nothing else, Lorna could hardly move due to putting her hip out, but everyone else seemed fine. Lorna & I had another round of setting each other off crying, anticipating the horrors of the day ahead!
We harnessed the dogs up but left on their overnight chains until we had a quick look at the Sami museum and the nearby reindeer herd. So off we went on a downhill, and off i fell within seconds! Seeing my sled was on its side, i thought it was safe enough, but no. Those clever huskies pulled the sled back upright and legged it. I had to run through knee deep powdery snow to try to catch them up but only got about 1/3 of the distance before collapsing. I should have felt embarrassment, but just felt relief when Alex rescued me with a lift on his sled. my dogs had come to a halt in line so i just needed to hop on again. It took me probably 10 mins to get my breath back, but fortunately the rest of the day was incident free. Finally I was able to relax a little and enjoy myself…in complete contrast to yesterday. It helped that we didn’t have the biting wind, we still finished in the dark, but all i felt on this route was admiration for the landscape and the power in the 16 paws pulling me. Yesterday was probably when we hit the sledding equivalent of the wall in marathon terms, today we were through and out the other side.
I got the answer to my unasked question of what happens if you meet husky teams coming the other way…it was a complicated manoevre!
We also saw a wonderful blanket of mist rising on the horizon as night fell..very eerie in total silence.
The lights have been visible again, but we’ve been rather blase about them when it came to choosing between going to bed, or getting all the gear & slightly damp boots on again.
It was -21c tonight, that’s -5F for those still counting in "old money". The water we pulled from the well and left outside was frozen in less than 1/2 hour. We all had frozen eyelashes, and the dogs and harnesses are covered in chunks of ice. Great fun!
Still concern over Rebecca’s lack of eating properly – Alex is getting very close to getting her transferred back to Mushers lodge since she was freezing cold but still taking in no fuel to keep her body working. The situation will be reviewed again in the morning, so we’re all nagging/counselling/being pitas to get her to do what she needs.
Tomorrow, we’re up at the same time, but taking a more leisurely morning and shorter route to the next lodge. We’ve covered over 100km since yesterday and we’re feeling it in all our muscles. Hurrah!

Bunkbeds, hmm…top was better than bottom, but what with heat rising n all, it was like a sauna up there! I forgot to mention that we had no electricity in the cabin, candlelit dinner was fun (mini gas cooker) but headtorches were a must for visits to the toilet "hut"…best recommended for those with no sense of smell, fortunately the seat was polystyrene so well insulated.
Anyway, I was the 7am alarm call since i’d only nabbed a coupe of hours sleep again. Team A got the breakfast ready while Team B fed the dogs again. Quicker than last night since the huge water pot was warm enough to mix the meal with.
A few of us took more photos before tucking into porridge, bread and cheese (or ham). Alex was having a hard time with Becky as she wasn’t eating, and we need around 3500 calories a day to keep going in current temperatures. Since her dad is probably reading this, i’ll say "don’t worry, she’s fine now"…but keeping the threat of contacting him up my sleeve just in case
So, we took forever to pack uptidy up then harness up the dogs. I put my wheel dogs on first by mistake, so they wandered over to argue with some neighbouring ones while i clipped on my leaders. With over 50 dogs on the trip, it takes us a good hour to get them ready, and the noise is deafening!
We had our first casualties as we headed out of the forest on a handbrake turn.. I felt smug enough to get round without tipping the sled over…karma, oops!
There had been so much snow lately that the trail was completely covered. Milos was pretty much using his dogs and sled as a snowplough, tough on all of them since they had to do it regularly over 6ish hours.
I had an impressive wipeout not long into the trip, but needed 2 people to get me out of the snow i’d landed in…any time i stuck out a limb to use as leverage, it just sank. I think i had to roll my way out in the end, the used helping hands to get me and my deep-wedged sled upright. I was a little thrown by this, since the falling on day 2 was much easier to recover from. I also managed a couple of upright falls where i couldn’t tip the sled over so had to hold on until my resistance acted as a break.
The earlier one had shaken my confidence though, so i spent the whole day gripping so tightly it was hard to de-grip my fingers by the end. Lots of lovely tension to look forwar
to tomorrow if the reiki doesn’t sort it out first!.
We made a stop for a toilet break after a couple of hours, it should only have taken one! Due to how late we were running, the decision was taken to skip our lunch break, but only found this out around 6pm.
Verbal fisticuffs ensued between me and Jennifer (not Jenny) after my dogs sniffed her bum a time too many. I was getting cramp in my left leg from standing on it while i braked with my right, braking was almost constant since jennifer’s dogs were on a go-slow day with no overtaking lane. So we swore at each other a bit but eventually made up after both of us apologised! I spent a lot of the day in tears as a result of lack of sleep/food/hormones, rather than the awestruck ones i had yesterday. We are, according to Alex, his most emotional group…i wasn’t the only one wailing by the end of it!
As we yomped onwards, it was getting pretty dark, so we had to keep pushing on despite our fatigue. Nearer the end, Amanda’s sled tipped but instead of getting up, she climbed on it and wouldn’t move. Eventually she was on her feet, but we all had a little assistance from Alex to get past the hazard. The hazard turned out to be the river underneath us. Although it was frozen, the snow on top pushed the ice down to give some water lying on top of it, but we didn’t know that when trying to push off in a watery hole!
Finally, after going through forests resembling a theme park ride with a Splash Mountain log flume at the end, we reached our pit-stop for the night, a local Sami home with electricity and running water!
We seemed to take forever to get the dogs chained up in the dark, with kneehight drifts, but it was all done eventually. We love tonight’s accommodation – one big room upstairs with mattresses on the floor, a sauna we were mostly too knackered to bother with and a home cooked meal waiting for us along with plenty of tea and coffee. The carnivores had Rudolph served up to them, tasted like beef apparently. Becky ate most of ut, meaning Alex was happy enough for her to stay with the group, and the car on standby, to take the catering help back to mushers lodge, went without an additional passenger.
Right, i’m so exhausted i must go to sleep now, apologies for any typos as i’m dozing off mid-type.
Tomorrow we go back to last night’s hut but a slightky different route. Milos is thinking of getting a snowmobile to plough a trail for us this time.

Had a horrible night, not able to sleep properly unless sitting up, otherwise I felt like my blood pressure was going to shoot through the roof. Think I may have had a panic attack due to claustrophobia in the bottom bunk & a mummy-style sleeping bag. And maybe thinking about the task ahead, combined with missing my Boys! Have never been so glad to see the glimmer of dawn at 7am.
This was Day 2, the day we got let loose with our dogs in a LOT of snow.
Breakfast at 8 was followed by packing up & storing any unnecessary clothes for our return on day 6.
We then got our instructions on harnessing the dogs, and a test drive of a sled behind a snowmobile. This was reasonably successful apart from me trying to take out the corner of a dog cage due to braking too hard. Getting off the sled, i realised my legs felt like jelly, obviously anticipating what was to come!
We got handed scraps of paper with our dogs’ names on it and any notes about bad habits they have. My lead dogs are Rune and Retfar, while the 2 "wheel" dogs that bear the brunt of the pulling work are Uno and Sara.
We ate an early lunch before suiting up fully, then begging for earplugs when the huskies twigged what was about to happen!
The lead dogs get attached first, harnessing them by firmly gripping them around their waist using your thighs. The harnesses take the strain, while a tie line between the collars of the lead dogs prevents them taking 2 different routes around a tree…
The wheel dogs are attached last, and tend to be more placid than their leaders!
While the dogs are getting hooked up, the sled is firmly attached to the ground by an anchor, a particularly vicious looking hook. Once the convoy is ready to go, anchors are stowed while feet keep the pack back by using the springloaded brake.
So, we set off with rigor mortis grip on the sleds, through some tricky curves along forest trails. I managed to do a textbook fall at the first major corner, pulled sled over for traction, held on to prevent the dogs escaping and came to a quick halt! After that, you’d think it was all plain sailing, but no…the fast dogs pulled too far ahead and the rest of us took a wrong turn at a crossroads! This added probably half an hour to the journey through "challenging" terrain, until we eventually met up with the others again with a little help from our backup guide on a snowmobile!
We spent the rest of our daylight sledding across a vast plain in relative silence, apart from the dogs panting and the sound of wood gliding over snow and ice. We learnt to slow down on a downhill, do a scooter push or completely jump off to help the dogs on an uphill. I learnt to overtake and be overtaken, as well as figuring out my balance one footed!
Following many more stops for falls or to swap the slower dogs with faster ones to help the convoy stay together, we rounded the final few bends in a hail-like snowstorm and saw our cabins for the night.
I’ve never been so relieved!
Of course, that wasn’t the end of things – we then had to stake out and unharness our dogs in reverse order using our head torches since night had well and truly fallen.
Sleds were then unpacked, and we had an hour or so to relax before dinner. As we were self catering tonight, we were divided into 2 teams for kitchen or dog feeding duty. Fortunately for our stomachs, i was on dog duty. We ended up having dinner (spaghetti, chopped sausage & veg in stock) before feeding the dogs as they needed to rest after the exercise so they could digest it better.
While we were trying to get the water pot boiling to mix with the dog food, we realised we could see the northern lights! It was a glimmer of green band along the horizon. An hour or so later, it spread further up through the sky, looking static, then we saw some dancing lights in other colours, though i only saw violet. Apparently this is incredibly rare in Sweden, being more common in Norway, so we were all really impressed and pretty awestruck.
Tempers in the group are gradually fraying thanks to the strain and lack of sleep for the last couple of days, but Alex is doing his best to keep everyone happy. We had one non dog related accident an hour or so ago, when Amanda got a steam burn on her back as the lid was taken off the pot of boiling water on the woodburner. We’re going to sleep now, 7am wakeup to feed the pooches at 7.30!

For anyone reading this in advance of their trip, bring drywash/ hand gel, and don’t leave your book on the plane. Still, it must mean someone else needed Grantly Dick-Read than me.
Day 1 is a gentle one to make up for a 7am flight! The most strenuous thing we had to do was get from T5 to T4 at Arlanda airport.
There are ten fundraising tourists on the trip:
Rebecca from Comber lives not far from my mum, she’s the youngest ever to do this trip at 18. Jennifer from Preston is the oldest at 50ish. 6’6" Rhys from Caerphilly is our tallest. The other boys are Shahab, Alex our tour rep and Milos our pack leader. The other girls, Jenny (my mumsnet friend), Lorna (mum to a 3 & 1 yrold), Lindsey & carrie (custodians of Kermit) and Amanda who I don’t know much about yet.
Scary moment – landing at Kiruna and realising how much snow and ice was underfoot where we parked up. Awesome moment- flying north along the Swedish coastline and having a window seat to see the sea gradually turn to ice!
On arrival at Mushers lodge, we went to greet a few huskies. They are so friendly, I went back later to say hello to the rest of them, sending out plenty of Reiki on autopilot which they seemed happy with!
Glad to find out that "working" dog means they sleep outdoors and aren’t allowed to roam free, but we can give them plenty of attention to forge a better bond.
After dinner of meatballs (veggie balls alternative), pasta & broccoli with plenty of second helpings, we had our team briefing. Tomorrow, we’ll be allocated 4 dogs each, shown how to harness them and have a test drive on a sled attached to a snowmobile before we set off for real after lunch. Far too much information to remember at this stage, but I’m sure we’ll be experts by Thursday when we leave!
No electricity or running water at tomorrow’s hut, so paper blogging until I have somewhere to charge the phone while I type. It’s 8.30pm here and most of us are turning in for the night. All this relaxation is exhausting…

I said goodbye to Eddie this morning, he didn’t have a care in the world since he was in DADDY’s CAR! Monty is more suspicious as he sees luggage, which generally means he isn’t going anywhere with me.

Coach leaves in just under an hour, there may be considerable blogging silence if batteries give up the ghost etc., but you can also follow any updates on facebook or @dougggie on twitter.

Here’s to safe flights and Northern Lights! Oh, and some noisy dogs and new friends

Officially two, but in reality, I set off tomorrow with the coach up to Heathrow & an overnight stay before our (gulp) 5am checkin on Friday. My woolie undies are still a no-show, so will have to pack alternatives!

About time I gave a namecheck to everyone who’s sponsored me so far, so in no particular order, here goes:

My parents, my husband, Jon’s parents, my toddler (donating his xmas money), my brother & sis-in-law, Mamgee

My twitter pals @Tums2Mums, @truthscompany, @affirmingspirit, @reikifurbabies, @intuitivebridge, @faceofboe, @cosmicmuse, @tracyej, @merryberry, @indiemadwife, @clairelancaster, @kellyfairy, @neilperryman, @markydonovan, @pegkd, @mysgreen, @laurenbarst

Good friends, many mums & a couple of lovely corporates: Dean, Lyndon, Fi, Michelle, Beba , clareb, Sarah P, Claire & Stephen, John S, Sal & Em, Angelo, Robert, Gary, Colette, Abby & Dave, Julie, Nicole, Pets At Home and Atlas Elektronik Uk.

Thank you all very much!

If you’re not on the list and want to be, there’s still time to sponsor me here! If you’ve already sponsored me and you’re not on the list, I’m afraid that’s because I have an appalling memory and you’ve paid me offline so I don’t have a note of it on the justgiving site, sorry.

Don’t make me go postal! Help save dogs like Monty by supporting Dogs Trust
